Concerns are growing over the potential postponement of Sunday’s Liverpool vs. Manchester United clash at Anfield due to severe weather conditions. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for Merseyside, predicting “snow and freezing rain” that could disrupt transport and other services.
Some parts of the UK are expected to see up to 40 centimetres of snow, putting the high-profile Premier League fixture between two of England’s most successful clubs in jeopardy. This follows the postponement of last month’s Merseyside Derby when Liverpool’s trip to Everton was called off due to Storm Darragh’s 100mph winds.
The forecast of snow followed by rain may hinder fans traveling to Anfield, with authorities urging travelers to prepare with warm clothing, food, water, blankets, and ice scrapers. Public transport users may face delays or cancellations as temperatures hover around 3°C, with “feels like” temperatures dropping below zero. The Manchester Evening News has also reported that Manchester City’s home game against West Ham could face similar disruptions.
Rumors of a Safety Meeting Circulate
Unconfirmed reports suggest a safety meeting may be held at 9 a.m. on Sunday, ahead of the scheduled 4:30 p.m. kickoff, to assess whether it’s safe to proceed. Such discussions are common in extreme weather conditions to prioritize fan safety.
Liverpool, currently leading the Premier League by six points with a game in hand over Arsenal, may face further fixture congestion if the match is postponed. The rescheduled Merseyside Derby is already set for February 11, and another postponement could complicate their title run as the season enters its crucial stages.
