Luke Littler made history on Friday night as the youngest-ever winner of the PDC World Darts Championship.
The 17-year-old defeated Michael van Gerwen in dominant fashion at London’s Alexandra Palace to claim his first world title, marking the beginning of what promises to be an extraordinary career for the Warrington native.
Outside of darts, Littler is a devoted Manchester United fan and will be hoping his team can pull off a win against Liverpool at Anfield tomorrow.
Littler’s jab at Liverpool
Speaking to the press after his victory (via Sky Sports), Littler joked that he’d love to take his trophy to Old Trafford. He also took a cheeky swipe at Liverpool, saying he was “glad” to have beaten Liverpool supporter Stephen Bunting in the semi-finals. Littler added that he was “pretty sure” Bunting would have paraded the trophy at Anfield if he had won.
A history of taunting Liverpool
Littler isn’t new to making digs at Liverpool. Before United’s clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford last April, he selected six United players in a combined XI, leaving out Liverpool stars like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konaté, Alexis Mac Allister, and Luis Díaz in favor of Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Kobbie Mainoo, and Alejandro Garnacho.
He also stirred the pot during a Premier League Darts round in Liverpool, held the night after Everton beat Liverpool 2-0 to end their title hopes. Responding to playful boos from the Liverpool crowd, Littler cheekily referenced the Goodison Park scoreline with a hand gesture.
While it’s all in good humor, Littler clearly knows how to add some spice to the rivalry. Although he bested Liverpool fan Bunting this week, Reds supporters will hope it’s their turn to celebrate after tomorrow’s match at Anfield.
