Arne Slot delivered a mixed update to Liverpool fans during this morning’s press conference ahead of their upcoming match against Manchester United on Sunday. The manager confirmed that Joe Gomez will be out for “a few weeks” due to a hamstring injury sustained in last week’s victory over West Ham. This setback is particularly concerning for Liverpool, given their existing injury concerns in that position.
Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley, both absent since late November, are now reportedly close to returning to action. Slot shared that both players would be training with the team for the first time today, adding, “I’m curious and interested to see where they exactly are.”
Slot further revealed there were no additional injury issues for Liverpool, other than Gomez, and expressed hope that everyone else would be available for Sunday’s match.
With Gomez’s injury, the return of Konate is especially crucial. While it may be too soon for him to start against United, he could potentially make his return in the midweek Carabao Cup match against Tottenham. Similarly, Bradley might not feature against United but could play against Spurs or Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup, helping to manage fitness levels and offer Trent Alexander-Arnold a much-needed rest.
Sunday’s match is the first of eight fixtures for Liverpool this month, including five in just two weeks, before the Champions League resumes on January 21. Effective squad management will be key for Slot, especially with Gomez’s injury, though the returns of Konate and Bradley should help ease the pressure on Liverpool’s defensive depth as they compete across four competitions.
