Michael Owen has shared a major update on the future of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is attracting transfer interest from Real Madrid.
With Alexander-Arnold’s contract set to expire this summer, speculation about his next move has intensified. On New Year’s Eve, it was reported that Liverpool rejected Real Madrid’s attempt to sign the 26-year-old in January.
Earlier reports from Spanish media suggested that Alexander-Arnold had informed Liverpool of his intention to join Real Madrid. However, the Liverpool Echo dismissed these claims.
According to The Times, Real Madrid had planned a January bid to secure Alexander-Arnold as a replacement for Daniel Carvajal, who is sidelined with a long-term ACL injury. Despite their urgency, Liverpool reportedly gave an “emphatic” rejection to the offer. This leaves two possible outcomes: Alexander-Arnold either leaves on a free transfer in the summer or signs a new deal with Liverpool, although the latter now seems less likely.
Owen, who transferred from Liverpool to Real Madrid in 2004, shared his insight on the situation. He believes Alexander-Arnold has likely already decided his future.

“The fact that Real Madrid have officially declared their interest in signing Trent Alexander-Arnold suggests to me that his departure is imminent. If he intended to extend his contract, Madrid wouldn’t have made their move public. Discussions will have already happened behind the scenes. This is huge news.”
