Jamie Carragher Stunned by Gary Neville’s Controversial Team of the Season Pick
As the 2024/25 season crosses its halfway mark, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville revealed their respective Premier League Team of the Season selections so far. However, Carragher couldn’t help but laugh at one of Neville’s choices.
During Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the two pundits were tasked with selecting their top-performing XI from the Premier League. While stars like Mohamed Salah, Chris Wood, and Virgil van Dijk were unanimously included, no Manchester United players made the cut due to their dismal season, which included a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle. Similarly, Manchester City’s struggles didn’t stop Neville from naming Josko Gvardiol in his lineup.
The pair largely agreed on their picks, but Neville’s inclusion of Gvardiol at left-back sparked a heated exchange. In disbelief, Carragher challenged Neville’s decision, saying, “How have you picked Josko Gvardiol at left-back? He gives a goal away every game! Have you actually watched Man City? What games have you seen? Are you serious?”
Neville, known as one of the Premier League’s best-ever right-backs, defended his choice, admitting that left-back was the position he found hardest to fill. He praised Gvardiol for his attacking threat, noting the Croatian’s four goals this season, and argued that despite Manchester City’s defensive issues, Gvardiol remained the best left-back option.
“I am serious,” Neville replied. “Left-back is the toughest position to fill. He’s scored four goals, he’s a consistent threat, and he’s the player I’d pick at left-back right now. If I were building a back four, he’d be in it. He’s doing his job reasonably well, even if City are conceding more than usual.”
Carragher, however, wasn’t convinced. “We’re judging the first half of the season, and he’s given goals away. So why pick him?” he asked. Neville bluntly concluded, “Because I think he’s the best left-back in the league.”
