David De Gea Offers Support to Antonín Kinský Following Tottenham’s 5-2 Defeat to Atlético Madrid

Former David de Gea sparked plenty of attention online after reacting to Antonín Kinský being substituted just 17 minutes into Tottenham’s Champions League clash with Atlético Madrid on Tuesday night. Spurs were already in serious trouble early on, falling three goals behind within the opening 15 minutes of their Round of 16 tie after interim boss Igor Tudor handed the 22-year-old his first appearance in the competition.

In hindsight, leaving out Guglielmo Vicario for his inexperienced backup in such a high-pressure match looked like a risky decision. Tottenham — currently hovering just one point above the Premier League relegation zone — desperately need confidence, but the gamble backfired. Kinský was involved in the buildup to two early goals, prompting Tudor to replace him before the 20-minute mark at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The change did little to stop the damage. Although Spurs managed to respond with goals from Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke, they still conceded twice more in a heavy 5-2 defeat that left Tottenham’s Champions League hopes hanging by a thread.

Having experienced difficult moments in his own career, De Gea offered encouragement to the young goalkeeper. The Spaniard — who left Manchester United in 2023 before rebuilding his form with ACF Fiorentina — posted a message of support on X.

According to the veteran keeper, only those who have played the position truly understand its pressures, urging Kinský to stay strong and keep moving forward.

Former England national football team and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart also expressed sympathy during his analysis on TNT Sports. He and the rest of the panel felt Vicario should have started the match, given the stakes. Still, Kinský received encouraging gestures from teammates and even Atlético fans as he walked back to the bench.

Questions Grow Over Tudor’s Decisions

Tudor’s choices at Tottenham are increasingly being questioned. The club appointed him after parting ways with Thomas Frank, hoping he would steady the team, but results and performances have remained inconsistent.

After four matches without a win, Spurs still lack a clear tactical identity. Some decisions — like leaving defensive midfielder João Palhinha on the bench while experimenting with younger players — have puzzled observers.

Although Tudor was initially expected to remain in charge until the end of the season, growing pressure on Tottenham’s hierarchy could force them to reconsider if the team’s downward spiral continues.
