Alasdair Gold has expressed concern about how Tottenham Hotspur are handling the development of young midfielder Archie Gray during the club’s battle to avoid relegation.

After an impressive breakthrough season with Leeds United in 2023–24, Gray moved to Spurs in a £40 million transfer, signing a six-year contract. In his first season in north London, the teenager featured 46 times and played a part in the club’s triumph in the UEFA Europa League.

Now 19, Gray has continued to feature regularly this season, making 28 appearances while being used in several different positions. Instead of consistently playing in his natural central midfield role, he has often been deployed across the pitch—particularly in defence—effectively turning him into a “utility player” for Spurs.

Gold praised Gray’s talent and maturity but raised concerns that this approach could affect his long-term development. The England youth international has already played 20 matches at centre-back, 17 as a defensive midfielder, 11 at right-back, 10 in central midfield, seven at left-back and three on the right side of midfield.

In the current Premier League campaign, Gray has accumulated 1,203 minutes, scoring two goals and providing two assists while maintaining an 83.8% pass completion rate across 19 appearances.

According to Gold, players with Gray’s ability are usually developed carefully in their preferred position at most clubs. However, Tottenham’s ongoing injury problems have forced the youngster to fill multiple roles across the team.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold explained that while positional flexibility can benefit a young player, spending important early seasons away from their natural role could slow their development.

A similar situation has also involved fellow young midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who joined Spurs from Djurgårdens IF in a deal worth around £8.5 million. Bergvall has also been used in various roles across midfield and attack during his 71 appearances before suffering an injury earlier this year.

However, unlike Bergvall—who has mainly played in midfield and attacking areas—Gray has frequently been used in defence, spending much of his time at centre-back.

Despite the positional changes, Gray has quickly become a fan favourite among Tottenham supporters due to his commitment and versatility.
