Cristian Romero Issues Scathing Message Moments After Transfer Deadline

Cristian Romero has publicly criticised Tottenham Hotspur’s inactivity on the final day of the transfer window.

After a month of transfer activity, the window officially closed on Monday night, meaning clubs must now wait until June 15 to register any new signings.

While several Premier League teams were active throughout January — with Manchester City standing out after securing Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi — Tottenham supporters were left frustrated by their club’s limited business, especially with Spurs sitting 14th in the league table.

It seems Romero shares those concerns.

Shortly after the window shut, the Spurs captain took to social media with a strongly worded message that appeared to question the club’s approach.

Just hours before the deadline, Tottenham had earned an impressive draw against Manchester City despite being hit by an injury crisis that left nine senior players unavailable. Romero himself was forced off at half-time, with manager Frank later revealing the Argentine defender had been unwell.

Rather than focusing solely on the positive result, Romero used the moment to highlight Spurs’ lack of squad depth and transfer activity. In an Instagram post, he praised his teammates’ effort but expressed disbelief at the situation, noting that the team had only 11 available players and describing the circumstances as unacceptable.

He also stressed the squad’s determination to stay united, take responsibility and continue fighting, while thanking supporters for their backing.

Romero’s comments, posted soon after the window closed without any deadline-day arrivals, underlined his frustration with the club’s recruitment strategy.

In total, Spurs made only two signings during the window, bringing in Conor Gallagher from Chelsea for £34 million and 19-year-old defender Souza from Santos for £13 million. They also sold Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace for £35 million, having signed him for £47.5 million in 2023.

Meanwhile, several key players — including James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Micky van de Ven, Mohammed Kudus, Richarlison and others — remain sidelined with injuries, compounding Tottenham’s struggles.
