Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was visibly frustrated after City’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, believing Spurs’ opening goal should have been disallowed due to a foul on Marc Guehi. The Premier League has now released an official statement to clarify the decision.

City started strongly, taking the lead within 11 minutes through Rayan Cherki, who bypassed Spurs’ goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Antoine Semenyo then doubled City’s advantage. However, the second half saw a complete shift in momentum. Dominic Solanke, returning after missing large parts of the season, scored twice in 17 minutes to secure a draw for Tottenham.

Neither side managed a late winner at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Controversy Over Tottenham’s First Goal
Many fans questioned whether Spurs’ first goal should have counted. Initially recorded as an own goal by Guehi, the goal was later awarded to Solanke after review. Video footage shows a leg collision between Solanke and Guehi, but VAR did not intervene. The Premier League Match Centre explained that Solanke had played the ball, so the goal was credited to him.
“The referee’s decision was confirmed by VAR. Solanke’s challenge on Guehi was deemed fair as he played the ball. The goal is officially credited to Solanke,” the statement read.

Guardiola Reacts

After the match, Guardiola expressed his anger, saying, “Once again… Have you seen it? Nothing. Marc [Guehi] has the ball, he’s kicked from behind, and it’s a goal. One more.” He added to BBC Sport: “If this happened to a striker, it would be a penalty. I’m not a referee. Fascinating in the Premier League.”

City, now six points behind Arsenal, will aim to bounce back in their upcoming League Cup clash with Newcastle United before facing Liverpool in the Premier League.
