Fabrizio Romano shares Liverpool right-back update as transfer deadline nears

 

 

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool have made an enquiry to Inter Milan regarding Denzel Dumfries as the January transfer window nears its conclusion. The Reds are facing a right-back crisis after injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, leaving the inexperienced Calvin Ramsay as the only senior option, with less than 72 hours remaining before the deadline.

Although reports earlier this week suggested Liverpool were unlikely to move for a short-term solution, Romano explained that the club did explore the Dumfries situation. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he confirmed that Liverpool held informal, club-to-club talks with Inter to understand the player’s availability and injury status. However, Dumfries’ €20m–€25m release clause is only valid in the summer, not January, and no bid or negotiations have followed these discussions.

Romano added that Dumfries is expected to return from injury within a few weeks, but Inter are not open to a loan deal, which is the only scenario Liverpool would currently consider. As things stand, there is no active pursuit—just exploratory conversations—though the Dutch international could be one to watch as a potential summer target.

With Frimpong and Bradley both sidelined and fitness issues continuing to haunt the position, Arne Slot may be forced to rely on Ramsay, shift Joe Gomez across once fit, or continue using midfielders in defence. While workable in the short term, it’s far from ideal. Liverpool now face a decision: act before Monday night’s deadline, or hope their injury problems don’t worsen as the season progresses.
