Tottenham gain clarity over Leon Goretzka transfer after official decision

Tottenham did not have to wait long to find out whether a January move for Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka would become a reality.

Spurs were linked with the German international earlier in the week amid reports that he was close to deciding his future at Bayern. With his contract at the Allianz Arena due to expire in the summer, Goretzka had attracted interest from several clubs, including Atletico Madrid.

However, clarity arrived on Friday. After seven successful years in Munich — during which he won six Bundesliga titles and the 2020 Champions League — Goretzka confirmed he will leave Bayern at the end of the season. That announcement effectively ends any chance of a winter transfer, meaning Tottenham will not add a midfield signing before Monday’s deadline.

“As honoured as I am by interest from top international clubs, I’ve clearly decided that I want to remain at FC Bayern until the end of the season,” the 30-year-old wrote on Instagram.

Goretzka is now expected to become one of the most coveted free agents in the summer, although it remains unclear whether Spurs will join the pursuit. His appeal is obvious: Sofascore data shows he averages 2.5 ball recoveries per game, maintains a 92% pass success rate, and wins around half of his duels — qualities that make him a strong midfield controller.

Despite being used more as a rotational option under Vincent Kompany, he has still made 28 appearances across all competitions, starting 16 matches, highlighting his continued value to Bayern.

While Tottenham have midfielders with similar attributes, none currently offer the same complete impact. If a summer move becomes possible, it is a transfer the club would be wise to consider.
