“Nothing is certain” – Arne Slot issues telling update on Andy Robertson’s Liverpool future
Arne Slot has suggested he fully expects Andy Robertson to remain at Liverpool this season, despite persistent links connecting the Scotland left-back with a move to Premier League rivals Tottenham.
Robertson, who arrived from Hull City in 2017, has lifted every major trophy during his Anfield career and remains a hugely popular figure among the Liverpool faithful.
Although the 31-year-old has largely played a supporting role to summer recruit Milos Kerkez this campaign, he looks set to return to the starting XI as the Reds welcome Qarabag in the Champions League.
“Robbo will be involved tomorrow,” Slot said, via the Express. “He’s been part of this club for many years and I’m pleased to have him. Having players available is crucial for us right now. Nothing is ever certain in football, but yes, I expect him to stay.”
Liverpool are currently short of options at centre-back, with Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez injured and Ibrahima Konate absent due to a family bereavement.
As a result, Robertson is expected to start at left-back against the Azerbaijani side, while Slot hinted that a midfielder could partner Virgil van Dijk in central defence, according to BBC Sport.
Liverpool’s inability to land Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in the summer is now proving costly, with no clear signs of defensive reinforcements arriving.
Robertson wants more minutes
The club’s No.26 has been open about his love for Liverpool but has also admitted he isn’t satisfied with a reduced role.
“I want to play,” Robertson told BBC Sport, quoted by Empire of the Kop. “Every footballer wants to play. If someone is happy sitting on the bench, they don’t belong at a football club.”
With his contract nearing its final months, the vice-captain has acknowledged he’s assessing his future.
“I’ve got five months left, so we’ll see what the options are — whether that’s staying or looking elsewhere,” he added.
When selected this season, the Scotland captain has delivered, and he’ll be pushing hard for regular starts as the campaign reaches its decisive stage.
Is Kerkez the long-term solution?
In recent weeks, Milos Kerkez has begun to justify Liverpool’s £40m investment.
The 22-year-old’s attacking drive and defensive intensity were clear during the 3-0 Champions League win over Marseille, showcasing both his energy going forward and his determination at the back.
Still developing, Kerkez has plenty of room to grow — and Robertson could prove the perfect guide. Much like Robertson’s own journey after joining from Hull City in 2017, patience and refinement will be key.
Robertson eventually made the role his own, redefining the modern full-back with relentless work rate and aggression down the flank. Kerkez has the potential to follow a similar path — but there are areas of his game that still need sharpening.
