Gareth Southgate Suddenly Becomes Leading Contender for Premier League Job After Odds Change

Bookmakers have significantly shortened the odds on Gareth Southgate making a return to Premier League management. The former England manager stepped down after Euro 2024 ended in frustration, resigning just two days after England’s final loss to Spain and concluding an eight-year spell in charge. Since then, the 55-year-old has regularly been linked with top-flight vacancies.

Southgate was heavily tipped to take over at Manchester United following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal in October 2024. However, United first turned to Ruben Amorim, who was sacked earlier this month, before eventually appointing Michael Carrick, during which Southgate’s name again entered the conversation. More recently, he has also been mentioned as a potential candidate at Tottenham, with Thomas Frank coming under growing pressure after another challenging campaign following Spurs’ struggles under Ange Postecoglou last season.

New betting markets now point towards a possible move to London. According to Odds Checker, Southgate has become the frontrunner to replace Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace. Despite leading Palace to FA Cup glory last season, Glasner has come under increasing scrutiny. His public frustration over the sale of captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City reportedly unsettled chairman Steve Parish, particularly after a 2–1 defeat to Sunderland. While talks were later held to smooth over the situation, Palace are still expected to make a managerial change, with Glasner set to leave at the end of the campaign.

Southgate is currently the bookmakers’ favourite to take over, with Sky Bet, Paddy Power and William Hill pricing him at 5/1, while bet365 and BetVictor have him at 6/1. He does have prior Premier League experience, having managed Middlesbrough from 2006 to 2009, a spell that ended in relegation.

For his part, Glasner has insisted his focus remains fully on Palace until his departure. Speaking before their 3–1 loss to Chelsea, he revealed he and Parish had lengthy discussions and emphasized that both sides remain “100 per cent committed” for the rest of the season, despite his decision to step down and reject a new contract.
