Liverpool’s impressive start to the season under new manager Arne Slot has reinforced their position as Premier League leaders, maintaining a seven-point advantage at the top with a game in hand.
The Reds have also excelled in Europe, advancing smoothly from the Champions League group stage, and are contenders for domestic honors, having reached the League Cup semi-finals.
Despite their success, Liverpool faces off-field challenges, with injuries and contract issues requiring attention.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Liverpool’s transfer plans, revealing that while the club may explore potential signings, their main priority in January will be addressing the contracts of three key players—Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah.
All three players are set to become free agents at the end of the season, putting pressure on Liverpool to secure their futures. If agreements aren’t reached by January 1, they will be free to negotiate pre-contract deals with foreign clubs.
Romano spoke to GiveMeSport about the club’s plans for 2025, stressing the urgency of the contract situation. He stated, “The summer will definitely be busy, Liverpool are already scouting players. Right now, the focus is on the contracts of Trent, Salah, and Van Dijk.”
Liverpool’s squad depth has also been tested by injuries. While players like Alisson, Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa, and Harvey Elliott have returned, the team is still missing Conor Bradley and Ibrahima Konate.
Slot may consider adding reinforcements in January to strengthen their chances in multiple competitions, as Liverpool remains active in all fronts.
Liverpool’s transfer activity in the summer of 2024 was modest, with Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili as the only notable signings. However, Romano suggested that the club is planning for a busy summer in 2025, with preparations already underway to identify potential targets.
For now, the club’s primary focus remains securing contract extensions for their star players. Recent reports indicate that Liverpool is close to finalizing deals for at least two of the three players. It is believed that an agreement has been reached with Van Dijk, and there are reports suggesting that Mohamed Salah’s two-year contract extension could be announced soon.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation is the most complex, with his reported wage demands and interest from Real Madrid making negotiations more challenging for the club.
