While Liverpool continue to endure a difficult league campaign, a former academy graduate is flourishing elsewhere after his widely discussed exit last summer.
It has been a challenging season for Arne Slot’s side. After 23 matches, the reigning champions find themselves 14 points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal following a dramatic 3-2 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Goals from Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai had erased Bournemouth’s early pressure, but a stoppage-time strike from Amine Adli sealed a heartbreaking defeat for Liverpool. Slot later pointed to fatigue caused by a relentless fixture schedule, compounded by injury setbacks and a lack of squad depth.

“If you keep playing the same players, it’s natural that some will be exhausted towards the end, especially against such an intense Bournemouth side,” Slot explained.
Liverpool’s midfield has carried a heavy workload in recent weeks, reigniting debate over the club’s decision to sell Tyler Morton last summer.

Morton, who joined Liverpool’s academy at the age of seven, made his senior breakthrough under Jürgen Klopp and showed clear signs of his potential.
Recalling Morton’s early impression, Thiago Alcântara once said: “The first time Tyler trained with us, I asked, ‘Who is this player?’ I think he has a very bright future at Liverpool and in football overall.”

Despite that promise, the 2024–25 season proved frustrating for Morton. He made just five appearances across all competitions, all of which came in cup matches.
Eager for consistent first-team football, the 23-year-old completed a £15 million move to Ligue 1 side Lyon—a transfer that suited all involved at the time.
However, as Liverpool continue to struggle for midfield options, it could be argued they are missing a player with Morton’s profile, particularly as the England youth international continues to silence his critics.

Now one of Ligue 1’s standout performers, Morton scored and assisted in Lyon’s emphatic 5-2 victory over Metz on Sunday. That display came just a day after Wataru Endo was introduced from the bench to play out of position at centre-back alongside Van Dijk.

In an exclusive interview with SPORTbible in October, Morton reflected on whether he felt trusted by Slot during his final season at Anfield.

“I think he believed I was a good player, but I didn’t really feel that trust was there,” Morton said. “From my perspective, the lack of chances was about trust, not ability.

“When I did get opportunities in the cup, I felt I performed well. I stayed patient, kept my focus, finished the season strongly and went on to play at the Under-21 Euros, which was incredible.”
He added: “I spoke with him a few times during the season. Some players let frustration and ego take over, but that’s not me.

“I disagreed with how little I played, but it was out of my hands. I gave everything I could, even playing for the Under-21s when others might not have.”
Morton concluded: “I did everything possible to stay fit and mentally sharp, ready for my chance—but those opportunities still didn’t really come.”
