Trent Alexander-Arnold could be set for a return to England after reports suggest a Premier League club has been in talks with intermediaries regarding the defender.
The 27-year-old joined Real Madrid last summer, leaving his boyhood club Liverpool after running down his contract at Anfield. During his time at Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold scored 23 goals in 354 appearances and won an impressive array of trophies, including two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the League Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
His departure divided Liverpool fans—some understood the move to Real Madrid, while others felt betrayed by his decision to leave. Initially, Alexander-Arnold was expected to join Real on a free transfer, but the Spanish giants reportedly paid £8.4m to allow him to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup.
At Real, he has made just 11 appearances so far, including a Champions League clash against Liverpool where he was booed by the home fans at Anfield. Injuries have hampered his debut season, and even when fit, he has started only five La Liga matches.
Now, reports link Alexander-Arnold with a sensational Premier League return, potentially to one of Liverpool’s rivals. Manchester City, who have been active in the January transfer window—signing Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for £64m and Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace for £20m—are reportedly monitoring the situation.
City trail Arsenal by four points after a 2-0 win over Wolves, ahead of the Gunners’ clash with Manchester United at the Emirates. While Alexander-Arnold is not believed to be on City’s radar this month, sources indicate he is a potential target for the summer as the club seeks a new right-back.
According to TeamTalk, intermediaries have already spoken with Pep Guardiola’s side, though no formal approach has been made. The Premier League champions are said to be carefully evaluating the situation.
