Virgil van Dijk hits back at journalist over ‘disrespectful’ comment aimed at Arne Slot

 

 

Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk has hit out at a journalist over what he described as a “very disrespectful” remark directed at head coach Arne Slot.

Before Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Marseille, Slot was taken aback by a question posed during his pre-match press conference. With the Dutchman under scrutiny this season following a noticeable dip in form, a reporter asked him about rumours linking former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso with the club, whether he felt increasing pressure from fans, and if he had been in contact with the Spaniard.

Slot appeared surprised by the line of questioning, especially as Alonso is currently without a club after his dismissal by Real Madrid. Given Slot’s struggles in his second campaign, speculation has grown around Alonso as a potential successor.

Responding with sarcasm, Slot laughed and said: “Yes, he called me. He asked what I think about the team because he’s taking over in six months — or maybe sooner. Maybe he takes over tomorrow!”

He later described it as “one of the strangest questions” he had ever been asked, before addressing the boos heard during Liverpool’s draw with Burnley at Anfield.

Liverpool then responded on the pitch with a convincing 3–0 win over Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome, with goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, an own goal by Gerónimo Rulli, and Cody Gakpo. The victory lifted the Reds to fourth in the Champions League standings on 15 points, putting them in a strong position to qualify automatically for the knockout stages.

After the match, Van Dijk condemned the question, saying it undermined Slot’s position, while also praising his manager’s composure.

“That was very disrespectful,” Van Dijk said. “Criticism is part of football, we all understand that, but there’s also a reason why that journalist isn’t here.

“It’s been a tough period for the players and the manager, but I think he dealt with it very well.”

Liverpool conclude their Champions League group campaign away to Qarabag, with all final fixtures kicking off simultaneously. The top eight teams will progress automatically, and the Reds currently sit two points clear of ninth-placed Barcelona.

Before that, Liverpool return to Premier League action on Saturday with an away trip to Bournemouth.
