Steven Gerrard Slams Arne Slot Over Post-Marseille Remarks
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has weighed in on Arne Slot following Liverpool’s 3-0 Champions League victory over Marseille.
On Wednesday night, the Reds secured their second win of 2026, comfortably defeating Ligue 1 side Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome. The win comes amid mounting pressure on manager Slot, who has faced criticism after recent Premier League stumbles against Leeds United, Fulham, and Burnley. Pressure intensified further after Real Madrid dismissed former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso, who has been tipped as a potential candidate to replace Slot.
Following the Marseille triumph, Gerrard offered his assessment of Slot’s recent form. In their latest Premier League outing, Liverpool drew 1-1 with Burnley on January 17, marking their sixth draw in a 13-game unbeaten run across all competitions. Currently, the Premier League champions sit fourth in the table, closer to 16th-placed Leeds than league leaders Arsenal, who lead by 14 points.
In the Champions League, Liverpool are also fourth in their group, with a win against Qarabağ FK at Anfield next week securing a top-four spot.
After the win, Gerrard praised Slot’s resilience under pressure, highlighting his tactical approach: “I’m really pleased for him. It can’t be easy with all that pressure. His tactics were spot on tonight. He deserves a lot of praise and credit,” Gerrard said on TNT Sports.
However, Gerrard also urged Slot to stop overemphasizing the challenge of low blocks, noting: “He needs to stop mentioning low blocks. They’ve been part of Liverpool’s games since my playing days. That’s just how it is.”
The former captain encouraged Slot and the squad to build on the momentum from the Marseille victory to regain consistency in the Premier League. “I don’t think we doubt Liverpool’s ability to handle the atmosphere. They have experienced players who’ve won the league and Champions League,” he said.
“It’s all about consistency now. Liverpool need to reset, recover properly, and carry this mentality into games like Bournemouth—and then there won’t be a problem.”
