Dominik Szoboszlai reveals he is negotiating a new contract with Liverpool

Dominik Szoboszlai has confirmed that discussions are ongoing regarding a potential new contract at Liverpool, but he emphasized that no final decision has been reached yet. The Hungarian midfielder is slightly more than halfway through the five-year contract he signed after joining the Reds in July 2023, reportedly earning £120,000 per week, according to Capology.

Despite a rare mistake that led to a goal against Barnsley last week and a missed penalty in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley, the 25-year-old has still been seen as Liverpool’s most dependable performer in what has been a frustrating season for the Premier League champions.

Szoboszlai confirms contract talks are ongoing

In response to recent reports (via CaughtOffside) claiming he has agreed in principle to a new Liverpool contract, Szoboszlai said talks are indeed underway, but no final agreement has been made.

When asked if negotiations were happening, the Reds’ number 8 told the Liverpool Echo:
“Of course, but there are always talks. You guys in the media make a big deal out of it for the public, because that’s your job.

“There have been discussions, but definitely no decision has been made. There is progress, but no final outcome yet.

I’ll keep working every week, in training, giving my best for the team and the fans.
“Let’s see what happens in the future. I’m happy here, but you know how football works, and everyone has to keep that in mind.”

Liverpool look to secure Szoboszlai for his prime years

Although Szoboszlai has revealed little beyond confirming talks have begun, it’s encouraging that Liverpool are actively planning to retain such a key player during his peak years.

He will be 27 when his current contract ends, and if Liverpool offer him a long-term deal that matches his importance to the club, he could remain at Anfield into his 30s.

However, Liverpool have more urgent contract issues to handle first. Ibrahima Konaté, Andy Robertson, and Trey Nyoni will become free agents in just five months, while Alisson Becker, Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Curtis Jones have deals expiring in 2027.

As long as Liverpool can meet his ambitions on the pitch, Szoboszlai seems likely to commit his future to the club. His importance is highlighted by the fact he has played the second-most minutes in Arne Slot’s squad this season (Transfermarkt).

The hope is that both player and club can reach an agreement in the coming months, avoiding a drawn-out process similar to the Salah and Van Dijk negotiations last season before they eventually signed new contracts.
