Federico Chiesa ready to take drastic steps to push through Liverpool departure this month
Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa is reportedly ready to take significant steps to secure a January exit from Anfield, though a key obstacle remains.
The Italian joined Liverpool from Juventus in the summer of 2024 but has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Arne Slot. While he has appeared in 16 of the Reds’ 22 Premier League matches this season, only one was from the starting XI, with the rest coming as substitute outings.
With Italy still in the hunt for qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup via March’s European play-offs, Chiesa knows regular game time will be crucial if he is to force his way into Gennaro Gattuso’s squad.
According to Calcio Mercato, Juventus are interested in re-signing the 28-year-old as they look to strengthen their squad in the push for Champions League qualification, with the club currently sitting fifth in Serie A. However, negotiations are proving tricky as Liverpool are said to prefer a permanent transfer, while Juve favour an initial loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the 2025/26 season.
Liverpool are believed to value Chiesa at between £13 million and £17 million. To help facilitate a move, the winger is reportedly open to taking a reduction on his £6.5 million annual salary.
Despite this, other Italian reports suggest Juventus may be shifting focus to alternative targets, including Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and Atalanta’s Daniel Maldini. La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Juve are in talks with Palace over a €33 million (£28.8 million) deal for Mateta, structured as a loan with a mandatory purchase clause should they qualify for European competition.
The report also notes that negotiations are being complicated by substantial agent fees, an issue that, while not insurmountable, remains unresolved.
Chiesa is under contract at Liverpool until 2028 and previously enjoyed a successful spell with Juventus between 2020 and 2024, winning two Coppa Italia titles during his time in Turin.
