Dominik Szoboszlai reveals ongoing discussions with Liverpool about a possible new deal
Dominik Szoboszlai has confirmed that discussions regarding a potential new contract at Liverpool are underway, though no final decision has yet been made. The Hungarian midfielder is just over halfway through the five-year deal he signed when joining the Reds in July 2023, reportedly earning £120,000 per week according to Capology.
Despite a rare mistake that allowed Barnsley to score last week and a missed penalty in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley, the 25-year-old has generally been one of Liverpool’s most reliable performers during a challenging season for the Premier League champions. Recent reports (via CaughtOffside) suggested that Szoboszlai had “reached an agreement in principle” on a new deal, but the midfielder clarified that talks are ongoing, and no formal decision has been reached.
When asked about contract discussions, Liverpool’s number 8 told the Liverpool Echo:
“Of course, but there are always talks. You guys in the media make a lot for the people and you keep on going because that’s your job. There have been talks but, for sure, not any decision has been made. There is always progress, but no decision has been made, and I’ll just keep on going every week, every training, giving my best for the team, for the fans. Let’s see what is going to happen in the future. I am happy here, but you know how football works, and that is something everybody has to take into account.”
While Szoboszlai has given little indication of the outcome, it is encouraging that Liverpool appear keen to secure the midfielder for his peak years. By the end of his current contract, he will be 27, and if offered a long-term deal with wages reflecting his importance to the club, he could remain at Anfield into his 30s.
Liverpool have several more urgent contract matters to resolve, with players like Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson, and Trey Nyoni just five months away from free agency, and others including Alisson Becker, Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Curtis Jones facing deals expiring in 2027.
Assuming Liverpool can meet his ambitions on the pitch, Szoboszlai seems likely to commit his long-term future to the club. His importance is underlined by the fact that he has played the second-most minutes of any player in Arne Slot’s squad this season (Transfermarkt). Ideally, both he and the club can reach a decisive agreement in the coming months, avoiding a drawn-out saga similar to those surrounding Salah and Van Dijk last season before they ultimately signed new deals.
