Tottenham step up pursuit of “phenomenal” £26m Champions League star
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly targeting a “phenomenal” Champions League-caliber player who has drawn attention from several Premier League clubs. This comes amid uncertainty over Micky van de Ven’s future at Spurs. The Dutch centre-back has been one of Tottenham’s standout performers this season, featuring in 29 games across all competitions. However, he has reportedly refused to commit to a new contract while Thomas Frank remains in charge. Transfer insider Dean Jones commented: “He has been one of the few players showing consistency and quality this season, but Tottenham risk losing him if the club fails to convince him of the project’s direction.”
Frank’s position at Spurs appears increasingly precarious, with the team winning just one of their last eight matches across all competitions. Their recent 2-1 defeat to a struggling West Ham United was particularly damaging. Tottenham will hope Van de Ven reconsiders should a high-profile manager replace Frank, but in the meantime, the club is exploring other centre-back options.
Tottenham have recently entered the race for Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu. According to Tutto Juve (via Sport Witness), Spurs are now actively pursuing the 25-year-old for a potential summer transfer rather than January. Aston Villa and Manchester United are also monitoring Kalulu, who could cost around €30m (£26m), though Juventus’ willingness to sell remains uncertain.
Kalulu has drawn attention for his versatility, capable of playing both centre-back and right-back. Scout Jacek Kulig described him as “phenomenal.” The Lyon-born defender has made 28 appearances for Juventus this season, contributing one goal and four assists, while helping the club keep four clean sheets in their last seven Serie A matches. He has also featured six times in the Champions League this season.
While Kalulu could strengthen Tottenham’s defence, particularly with Pedro Porro under scrutiny, the club’s primary focus should remain securing Van de Ven’s future, given the Dutchman’s key role this term.
