Thomas Frank took charge of Tottenham’s training session on Sunday, maintaining a composed, business-as-usual demeanor ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Borussia Dortmund, even as questions continue to surround his future.
Uncertainty intensified after Spurs suffered a dramatic 2–1 home defeat to West Ham on Saturday, a result that sparked chants from supporters calling for his dismissal. The loss dropped Tottenham to 14th in the Premier League and extended a dismal run of form, with just two wins from their last 13 league games.
Although Spurs remain in contention in the Champions League and still have a genuine chance of reaching the knockout phase, the club is expecting a noticeably lower turnout for Dortmund’s visit.
In the buildup to the match, Tottenham added former Ajax boss John Heitinga to Frank’s coaching staff, replacing Matt Wells, who departed before Christmas to take charge of Colorado Rapids. Heitinga led Sunday’s training session, with Frank supervising as usual. The Danish coach stressed that he personally pushed for Heitinga’s appointment, despite speculation the Dutchman could step in on a temporary basis should the club opt for a managerial change.
The situation remains finely balanced. The board has so far been reluctant to part ways with Frank, acknowledging that several of this season’s difficulties were outside his control in what was always expected to be a transitional year.
Prior to the West Ham match, CEO Vinai Venkatesham released an open letter to supporters, calling for patience and striking a calm, reassuring note. However, tensions spilled over when substitute Callum Wilson struck a stoppage-time winner, prompting prolonged boos from the home crowd. Fans also voiced their anger at Frank’s decision to substitute winger Mathys Tel, whom many wanted to see stay on the pitch. The backlash following Wilson’s late goal has left the board with a major decision to make over Frank’s future.
