A respected transfer insider has suggested that Marc Guehi would already be wearing red if Liverpool had truly pushed for him.

The Reds were close to landing the Crystal Palace skipper for £35m late in last summer’s window, but the deal collapsed in the final hours. When Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol was asked whether this should be seen as a major missed opportunity, his response only deepened the frustration. He explained that if Liverpool had “really, really wanted” Guehi, they would have signed him. Palace, he said, felt the Reds were casual about the deal, focusing spending elsewhere before making a late, take-it-or-leave-it approach.

Solhekol even revealed that Palace officials had to approach Liverpool at the Community Shield to ask whether the club was genuinely interested, as no concrete move had been made weeks later.

If true, it paints an unflattering picture of Liverpool’s handling of the situation. Supporters will wonder why the club waited until deadline day, when an earlier £35m bid could likely have been accepted with time for Palace to find a replacement.

The claim that Guehi would have been secured had Liverpool truly wanted him exposes an uncomfortable reality and leaves decision-makers facing justified criticism.
