After completing the signing of Souza, Tottenham have begun negotiations to bring in one of world football’s most highly rated young full-backs.
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly weighing up a January move for Borussia Mönchengladbach left-back Luca Netz as they look to bolster their defensive options for the decisive part of the season. Spurs are close to finalising the signing of Santos youngster Souza, but that deal has not dampened their search for additional full-back cover. Instead, Netz is viewed as a complementary signing who would add quality, depth and competition on the left flank rather than replace anyone.
The north London club have monitored Netz for a while, with his contract situation further increasing their interest. With less than six months left on his current deal, Mönchengladbach could be open to selling during the winter window rather than losing him for nothing in the summer, giving Spurs a chance to secure a cut-price deal.
Although only 22, Netz is widely regarded as one of Germany’s most promising young full-backs. He has featured regularly in the Bundesliga this season, starting eight matches, and has been a reliable performer for Gladbach. Since arriving from Hertha Berlin over four years ago, he has made 121 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing 18 assists, with 14 outings coming this term.
On the international stage, Netz has represented Germany at multiple youth levels, from U15 through to U21, highlighting his long-term potential despite yet to break into the senior squad.
Why Spurs are targeting a left-back
Tottenham’s interest is understandable given their ongoing issues at left-back. Destiny Udogie has been hampered by injuries, limiting him to just six Premier League starts under Thomas Frank, which has forced the manager to use Djed Spence and other temporary solutions. While Souza is expected to arrive soon, the 19-year-old lacks European experience, making Netz a more proven and reliable option.
His potential availability at a reduced fee only strengthens Spurs’ position, with reports suggesting the club are eager to accelerate talks and complete a deal before the window closes. Initial discussions are believed to have already taken place.
If both Souza and Netz are signed, Frank would suddenly have genuine depth on the left side, enabling rotation, easing the injury burden and offering greater tactical flexibility across domestic and European competitions.
Paratici set for Spurs departure
Away from the pitch, changes could also be on the horizon in the boardroom. Sporting director Fabio Paratici is reportedly preparing to leave Tottenham after the January transfer window, with the Italian said to be planning a return to Italy for personal reasons and linked with a senior position at Fiorentina.
His departure would mark the end of a notable and at times controversial spell in north London, during which he played a major role in reshaping the squad. As a result, this January window could represent Paratici’s final significant influence on Tottenham’s transfer dealings.
