After securing Souza, Tottenham have begun discussions to sign one of the brightest young full-backs in world football.
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly weighing up a January move for Borussia Mönchengladbach left-back Luca Netz as they look to bolster their defensive options ahead of the crucial final stretch of the season. Although Spurs are close to finalising the signing of Santos youngster Souza, the club’s search for full-back reinforcements remains active. Netz is not seen as a replacement but as an additional option who would immediately enhance depth and competition on the left flank.
Spurs have monitored Netz for a considerable period, and his contract situation has intensified their interest. With less than six months left on his deal, Mönchengladbach could opt to sell in the winter rather than risk losing him for nothing in the summer, potentially giving Tottenham the chance to secure him at a cut-price fee.
Despite being only 22, Netz is highly regarded in Germany and across Europe, often tipped as one of the continent’s most promising young full-backs. He has started eight Bundesliga matches this season and remains a reliable presence for Gladbach. Since arriving from Hertha Berlin over four years ago, he has made 121 appearances in all competitions, contributing three goals and 18 assists, including 14 outings this campaign.
On the international stage, Netz has represented Germany at every youth level from U15 to U21, highlighting his long-term potential even though he is yet to earn a senior cap.
Why Spurs are targeting a left-back
Tottenham’s interest is understandable given their ongoing issues at left-back. Destiny Udogie has struggled with injuries and has made just six Premier League starts under Thomas Frank, leaving the manager to depend on Djed Spence and other temporary solutions. While Souza is expected to arrive this month, the 19-year-old lacks European experience, making Netz a more proven and dependable option.
His potential availability at a reduced price further strengthens Spurs’ position, with reports suggesting the club are eager to accelerate talks and complete a deal before the transfer window closes. Initial discussions are believed to have already taken place.
If both Souza and Netz join, Thomas Frank would suddenly have genuine depth at left-back, enabling rotation, lowering the risk of injuries, and offering greater tactical flexibility across domestic and European competitions.
Paratici close to Spurs exit
Away from the pitch, changes are also anticipated at boardroom level. Tottenham sporting director Fabio Paratici is reportedly set to leave after the January transfer window, with the Italian planning a return to his homeland for personal reasons and linked with a senior role at Fiorentina.
His departure would mark the end of a notable and at times turbulent chapter in North London, during which he played a central role in reshaping the squad. As a result, this January window could represent his final major influence on Tottenham’s transfer dealings.
