James Pearce shares latest insight on Arne Slot’s Liverpool future

 

 

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has faced scrutiny at different stages of the season following a run of disappointing results. However, it has been suggested that his role at Anfield is not under any immediate threat.

Recent reports claimed Liverpool had already decided to part ways with the Dutchman after an inconsistent 2025–26 campaign. Spanish outlet Fichajes went as far as stating Slot would not last “beyond this week,” alleging the club had lost patience after a season that failed to meet expectations.

Liverpool travel to face Arsenal in the Premier League on Thursday night, with a significant gap separating the two sides. Mikel Arteta’s team sit five points clear at the top and could extend their lead to eight with a victory, while the Reds trail by 14 points.

Although Slot guided Liverpool to the title in his debut season, the club have struggled to reach the same standards this term and are now battling for a Champions League place. A series of damaging results, including back-to-back home defeats against Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven in November, highlighted their downturn in form.

Despite this, The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent James Pearce has played down suggestions that Slot is facing the sack. Speaking on Off the Ball Radio, Pearce said there is no current danger to Slot’s position, even if Liverpool lose at the Emirates.

Pearce explained that Liverpool’s hierarchy remain understanding of the challenges Slot has faced, pointing out that the club are still in the Champions League places despite ongoing issues. He also highlighted the emotional impact of Diogo Jota’s tragic death in July, noting that such a loss cannot be underestimated.

While acknowledging that Slot has made mistakes this season — including tactical errors and less effective substitutions compared to last year — Pearce stressed that several problems have been outside the manager’s control. He added that it would be “non-sensical” to suggest Slot’s job is on the line ahead of the Arsenal match.

Liverpool would also face difficulties identifying a suitable replacement if they chose to dismiss Slot. Former midfielder Xabi Alonso has been linked with the role but remains in charge at Real Madrid, despite facing pressure. Meanwhile, a sensational return for Jurgen Klopp has been floated by some fans, though the German is widely expected not to return to Anfield as manager.
