European reports drop a shock Arne Slot claim as frustrated Anfield bosses push for a major overhaul.

 

 

Sensational reports emerging from Spain suggest Liverpool could part ways with head coach Arne Slot as early as next week.

The Dutchman has endured a challenging second season at Anfield, with any realistic hopes of defending the Premier League title having faded long ago — and that despite the club spending close to £450m on new players last summer. As former Reds striker John Aldridge has conceded, Liverpool’s most achievable domestic target for the remainder of the campaign is now simply finishing in the top four and securing Champions League football — a far cry from expectations at the start of the season.

Following a week in which Chelsea, Manchester United and Celtic all dismissed Enzo Maresca, Ruben Amorim and Wilfried Nancy respectively, Spanish outlet Fichajes claims Liverpool could show similar ruthlessness with Slot in the coming days. A report dramatically titled “Bombshell: Liverpool to dismiss Arne Slot” alleges the 47-year-old has been “walking a tightrope for months,” with the club’s patience now exhausted and his departure imminent.

According to the report, Anfield decision-makers are already preparing for life after Slot and are assessing potential replacements capable of quickly reviving a faltering project. The hierarchy is said to be frustrated by repeated mistakes and is seeking a “drastic change” to salvage a deeply underwhelming season.

This is not the first time Slot’s future has come under scrutiny. Following a humiliating 4–1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven in November — Liverpool’s ninth loss in 12 matches — journalist Ian Doyle suggested the head coach had just one week to save his job. Although the Reds then went nine games unbeaten, recent disappointing draws against Leeds and Fulham have once again intensified the pressure.

Aldridge noted in his latest Liverpool Echo column that Slot is not untouchable, even at a club traditionally more patient than the likes of Chelsea or Manchester United. While the volatility of modern football means the possibility of a swift dismissal cannot be entirely ruled out, it would still come as a major surprise if Liverpool acted as quickly as the Spanish reports claim.

Until these rumours are backed up by more reliable sources closer to Merseyside, they should be treated with caution. A rapid sacking would represent a significant departure from Liverpool’s usual approach.

Slot has certainly made errors this season — questionable tactical calls and team selections among them — and consistency has been lacking. However, it remains unclear which genuinely superior and realistic options would be available if he were removed now. While the Dutchman is unlikely to be dismissed in the immediate future, a sustained improvement in both results and performances is urgently needed to silence the growing speculation surrounding his position.
