Liverpool reportedly reach deal for Slot’s successor as manager faces possible sacking ‘this week’

 

 

Reports suggest Xabi Alonso has reached a preliminary agreement to take over as Liverpool manager amid growing speculation that Arne Slot could be dismissed this week.

The Reds are enduring a disappointing Premier League campaign, currently sitting 14 points behind leaders Arsenal. Back-to-back draws have left them just seven points clear of 14th-placed Crystal Palace, putting Slot under mounting pressure.

Despite the board backing Slot during the summer transfer window and spending over £400m on new signings, a report earlier this week claimed Slot “will not continue as Liverpool manager beyond this week”, following the club’s ‘final decision’ on his future. The board reportedly considers the gap to Arsenal “unacceptable given last summer’s investment.”

Now, Spanish media claim that Real Madrid boss Alonso—himself under pressure—has a preliminary deal to replace Slot at Anfield. Rumors suggest he could be dismissed if Real Madrid lose their Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atletico Madrid on Thursday.

“At Anfield, the situation is being closely monitored,” the report notes. “While Slot began the project successfully, the club is not fully convinced his tenure will be long-term. Liverpool believes a step forward on the bench is needed to maximize talents like Florian Wirtz, and Xabi Alonso has emerged as the board’s preferred candidate.”

The Reds view Alonso as a perfect fit for their football philosophy. Familiar with the club and the demands of the Premier League, he offers a modern profile that appeals to the directors. Negotiations have been ongoing for weeks, and if Alonso becomes available after the Super Cup, Liverpool are ready to act.

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge warned that Slot could follow the path of other Premier League managers like Enzo Maresca and Ruben Amorim if results don’t improve soon. Writing in the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge said:

“Chelsea sacked Maresca. United have sacked Amorim. They acted early to secure a top-four finish. We’ve kept faith with Arne despite a tough season, but without last year’s league title, the outcome might have been different.”

He added:

“Liverpool aren’t quick to sack managers, but if Arne doesn’t deliver, it’s understood. Let’s hope he can turn things around—but we need to see signs of progress.”
