Reports emerging from Spain have made a dramatic claim that Liverpool could part ways with head coach Arne Slot as early as next week.

The Dutchman is experiencing a turbulent second campaign at Anfield, with any realistic chance of defending the Premier League title having vanished long ago — this despite an extraordinary summer spend of close to £450m on new arrivals. As club legend John Aldridge has reluctantly admitted, Liverpool’s domestic objective for the remainder of the season now appears to be a top-four finish and Champions League qualification, a far cry from expectations at the start of the campaign in August.

In a week that has already seen Chelsea, Manchester United and Celtic move on from Enzo Maresca, Ruben Amorim and Wilfried Nancy respectively, Spanish outlet Fichajes has suggested Liverpool may soon follow suit. A report titled “Bombshell: Liverpool to dismiss Arne Slot” claims the 47-year-old has been “walking a tightrope for months,” with the club’s patience supposedly exhausted. It adds that Slot may not remain in charge beyond this week.

According to the report, senior figures at Anfield are allegedly preparing for his exit and are already assessing potential replacements capable of reviving the project in the short term. The hierarchy is said to be frustrated by repeated mistakes and eager for a decisive reset to salvage what has been a deeply underwhelming season.

This is not the first time Slot’s future has come under scrutiny. Following Liverpool’s heavy 4-1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven in November — their ninth loss in 12 matches — journalist Ian Doyle claimed the head coach had just one week to save his job. Although the Reds have since gone on a nine-game unbeaten run, recent stalemates against Leeds and Fulham have once again placed Slot firmly under the microscope.

Aldridge recently wrote in his Liverpool Echo column that Slot is not untouchable, even at a club known for greater patience than Chelsea or Manchester United. While modern football’s unforgiving nature means the possibility of a sudden dismissal can never be entirely ruled out, it would still be a major surprise if Liverpool acted as swiftly as Fichajes suggests.

Until these claims are backed up by more reliable sources closer to Merseyside, they should be treated with significant caution. A decision as abrupt as sacking Slot within days would represent a sharp departure from Liverpool’s usual approach.

There’s no denying the 47-year-old has made questionable tactical and selection calls this season, with consistency and standout performances often lacking. However, the question remains: who would be a clearly superior and realistically available replacement at this stage?

While Slot is unlikely to be dismissed imminently, he may need a sustained improvement in both results and performances to finally quiet the growing speculation surrounding his future.
