Premier League managerial crisis: Arne Slot’s future hangs by a thread after Monday’s major departure
Arne Slot could be the next Premier League manager to lose his job following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal at Manchester United.
United parted ways with Amorim on Monday, bringing his 14-month spell at Old Trafford to an end. His exit marked the second managerial change of 2026, after Enzo Maresca also departed Chelsea last week. That leaves two members of the Premier League’s ‘big six’ currently without a manager.
With further changes expected before the campaign concludes, Slot may soon come under serious threat as Liverpool’s poor run of form continues.
Slot second favourite to be sacked next
Liverpool’s recent performances have been deeply disappointing. Although results briefly improved towards the end of 2025, standards have once again slipped.
The Reds were held to another draw at the weekend, with Harrison Reed’s stunning late strike earning Fulham a 2-2 result at Craven Cottage. The dropped points have intensified frustration among Liverpool supporters, many of whom are now questioning Slot’s future, particularly with Champions League qualification hanging in the balance.
According to the latest odds, Slot is priced at 4/1 to be the next Premier League manager dismissed, making him the second favourite. West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently leads the market at 2/1 after a difficult start to life at the London Stadium.
Slot reacts to Fulham draw
Slot was visibly frustrated after Liverpool surrendered points late on. Cody Gakpo appeared to have secured victory with a stoppage-time goal, only for Reed’s spectacular effort to deny the visitors all three points.
The result meant Liverpool failed to pull clear of Chelsea and Manchester United, who remain three points behind them.
Speaking to Sky Sports on 4 January, Slot reflected on his side’s attacking display and defensive lapses.
He suggested that scoring twice away from home should normally be enough to win, but admitted it was not the first time this season Liverpool had dominated only to concede a moment of brilliance. Slot also highlighted missed opportunities, pointing to two disallowed goals and an effort that struck the crossbar.
While acknowledging that the team is not yet performing at an ideal level, Slot insisted the players are giving everything. He also referenced squad management challenges, including injuries and the need to rely on inexperienced options, but stressed that Liverpool still fielded a strong XI.
Slot concluded by noting that chance creation fluctuates across the league, and although the performance was not perfect, it showed improvement on the previous week.
