John Aldridge believes Liverpool have an “unpredictable” talent who Arne Slot is not giving enough opportunities to.

 

 

John Aldridge has urged Arne Slot to give greater opportunities to one “unpredictable” talent in Liverpool’s squad during the second half of the season.

Rio Ngumoha burst onto the scene early in the campaign, impressing on Liverpool’s pre-season tour in the Far East and memorably scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Newcastle in August. Despite those standout moments, the 17-year-old has featured only sparingly, making just two senior appearances totalling 18 minutes since the end of October.

Writing in the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge criticised Slot’s side for becoming too “static” and “predictable”, arguing that Ngumoha could inject much-needed spark and spontaneity into the attack. The former Reds striker believes the teenage winger’s pace, flair and unpredictability make him a nightmare for defenders, even in short cameos off the bench.

Aldridge also pointed to past examples of young stars such as Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler, all of whom were trusted at a similar age. While acknowledging that Slot may be trying to protect Ngumoha by limiting his minutes, he insisted that if a player is good enough, age should not be a barrier.

There is logic in Liverpool handling the youngster carefully, given he is still only 17 and should not be burdened with excessive responsibility at such a huge club. However, Aldridge’s argument for using him more regularly as an impact substitute is compelling, particularly in matches where Liverpool struggle to break down organised, deep defences.

Ngumoha’s decisive influence against Newcastle showed what he is capable of, and while it would be unrealistic to expect that level of impact every time, his confidence and skill could unsettle tiring defenders late in games.

The teenager could be in line for a start in next Monday’s FA Cup tie against Barnsley, having made his senior debut in the competition last season. A strong showing there may convince Slot to turn to him more often.

The recent draw with Fulham appeared an ideal opportunity to unleash Ngumoha in the closing stages as Liverpool searched for a winner. Should similar situations arise in the weeks ahead, many would agree with Aldridge that the youngster deserves more chances to make a difference and possibly recreate his St James’ Park moment.
