Joel Ordonez flies out as reports surface of a £35m move to Liverpool

Reports emerging from Ecuador claim that Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez during the January transfer window.

According to the sources, the 23-year-old Ecuador international is set to earn around £57,000 per week, with Liverpool prepared to pay an initial fee of approximately £35 million to secure his signature.

Ordonez joined Brugge’s feeder side, Club NXT, in 2022 after leaving Independiente del Valle — a club renowned for its elite youth development in Ecuador. Since then, he has developed into a regular starter in both the Belgian Pro League and the Champions League, attracting interest from several top European clubs.

That interest now appears to be turning concrete, with Ecuadorian reports suggesting confidence that a move to Anfield is on the horizon. However, Club Brugge are known for driving hard bargains, and it remains unclear whether the deal will be finalised in the coming days or weeks.

For now, Brugge have resumed training following the winter break, travelling to Marbella for a warm-weather camp. Ordonez is included in the travelling squad, indicating that a transfer is not yet imminent.

A statement on the club’s official website confirmed that the Blauw-Zwart squad will remain in Spain from January 3 to January 9 to prepare for the second half of the season.

Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcements continues to grow, with Ibrahima Konate’s future uncertain, Giovanni Leoni sidelined through injury, and the club still feeling the impact of missing out on Marc Guehi. A potential departure for Joe Gomez could further thin their options.

Whether those concerns will be addressed this month with the signing of Joel Ordonez remains to be seen.
