Fabrizio Romano reveals player expected to head back to Liverpool in latest transfer update

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Harvey Elliott is expected to return to Liverpool following an underwhelming loan spell at Aston Villa, with another temporary move likely to follow.

The 22-year-old found opportunities limited at Anfield prior to his summer departure, and his situation has not improved at Villa Park, where he has failed to make a notable impact. Liverpool would have hoped the loan would provide Elliott with regular Premier League minutes—either to prove he could return ready to challenge for a place in Arne Slot’s squad or to raise his value ahead of a potential permanent exit.

However, things have not gone to plan.

Romano revealed on X that the England Under-21 international will head back to Liverpool before potentially being sent out again, with MLS side Charlotte FC emerging as a possible destination.

A move to Charlotte could represent a significant signing for the American club. Despite recent setbacks, Elliott remains young enough to rediscover his form and fulfil the promise that once marked him out as a future star. The former Fulham prodigy was highly regarded in his teenage years, and while his progress has stalled, time is still on his side to reignite his career.

There may even be Liverpool supporters who believe recalling Elliott for the second half of the season could be worthwhile. With the campaign proving difficult, additional options in midfield and attack could offer valuable depth.

That said, given Liverpool’s willingness to loan him out and his continued struggles at Villa, it is difficult to see Elliott currently possessing the level required to make a meaningful difference for the team.
