Early move sealed: Liverpool make surprise Thursday morning transfer announcement as Rio Ngumoha debate continues

Liverpool FC have officially announced that James Norris has sealed a permanent transfer to Irish side Shelbourne.

The move follows earlier reports surrounding the futures of the 22-year-old, alongside James McConnell and Owen Beck. Norris has already made 11 appearances for Joey O’Brien’s team, logging 734 minutes and providing one assist in a Europa League qualifier against HNK Rijeka.

This development comes as both McConnell and Beck are expected to see their respective loan spells end prematurely. McConnell, despite catching Arne Slot’s eye in European action earlier this year, has struggled for regular game time. Beck, meanwhile, has had his progress heavily disrupted by injury, most recently undergoing surgery after a hamstring issue.

Rio Ngumoha’s situation is slightly different. The teenager has arguably been unlucky, with his opportunities limited by Liverpool’s poor domestic form during the 2025/26 campaign. However, there is also a strong case that the club should avoid placing excessive responsibility on him so early in his development.

As Arne Slot pointed out:

“I think he has the most minutes of all 17-year-olds in the Premier League. That shows how much he’s already playing and how special that is at his age. It also reflects his quality, because it’s not normal for a 17-year-old to have that level of involvement.”

With that in mind, it seems unlikely Liverpool would approve a loan move for Ngumoha simply to compensate for any perceived lack of minutes. In the end, despite his immense potential, the young winger should not be expected to accumulate heavy senior minutes so early in his Anfield journey.
