Arsenal: Barcelona to ‘seal the deal’ as Gunners ‘finalize £62m payment’ for transfer

Arsenal are reportedly prepared to make a significant move for Barcelona defender Jules Kounde during the January transfer window.

Despite a solid Premier League season, the Gunners are trailing Liverpool, who hold a six-point lead with a game in hand. Arsenal bolstered their squad in the summer, making David Raya’s loan permanent and signing Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori, while Raheem Sterling and Neto joined on loan. However, injuries and inconsistent performances from these additions have left Mikel Arteta seeking further reinforcements to maintain a title challenge.

Reports from Spain suggest Arsenal are ready to pay €75 million (£62 million) for Kounde, with Barcelona president Joan Laporta reportedly willing to let the France international leave. Kounde’s recent dip in form has raised concerns at Camp Nou, prompting advice to Barcelona’s leadership to consider offers for the defender. Arteta believes Kounde could be a valuable addition, as he is not considered indispensable at Barcelona, and the club is open to selling him for the right price.

In addition to defensive targets, Arsenal may explore attacking options after injuries to Raheem Sterling and Bukayo Saka, who are sidelined for several weeks. Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has suggested Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo as a potential replacement for Saka. Speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show, Arsenal legend Ian Wright also endorsed the need for reinforcements on the right wing.

Wright praised Gabriel Jesus for his recent performances and called on other players to step up in Saka’s absence. Arteta acknowledged the challenge, stating he is exploring various options to adapt the team. Potential solutions include deploying Gabriel Martinelli, Ethan Nwaneri, Leandro Trossard, or Kai Havertz on the right flank, depending on tactical adjustments and player feedback.
