Six Liverpool Stars Facing Uncertain Futures at Anfield, Including Mo Salah

Liverpool underwent a major squad revamp during the summer transfer window, with a host of arrivals and departures at Anfield. Despite the overhaul, there are still six players on the club’s books who appear increasingly unlikely to wear the famous red shirt again.

After making just one signing in his debut campaign, Arne Slot was handed full backing by Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes to reshape the first-team squad in his image. Taking over from legendary manager Jürgen Klopp in 2024, the Dutch coach has already shown he is prepared to move on from several of his predecessor’s trusted names.
Unless there is a dramatic change of direction in the coming weeks or months, the following players may be approaching the end of their Liverpool careers.

Mohamed Salah

Salah’s brief appearance against Brighton before leaving for AFCON hinted at the possibility of a thaw in relations between player and manager. However, no clear decision has been made regarding his future. While he remains the least likely exit on this list, his absence has left supporters uncertain about what lies ahead.

Harvey Elliott

Many believed Elliott had played his final match for Liverpool after joining Aston Villa on loan in the summer, with the deal including a potential obligation to buy. However, discussions are now taking place over a possible early return in January, as Unai Emery has regularly left the midfielder out of matchday squads. Even if he does return, Slot does not appear to view him as a long-term starter, making another move away likely.

Wataru Endo

Liverpool’s decision to spend £16 million on Endo in 2023 raised eyebrows, especially after missing out on Moisés Caicedo and Roméo Lavia. A favourite of Klopp, the Japanese international has since fallen down the midfield hierarchy under the new regime. With several players now ahead of him in the pecking order and an injury ruling him out until the new year, speculation about an exit continues to grow.

Stefan Bajčetić

Bajčetić impressed during Liverpool’s difficult 2022–23 campaign, transitioning from centre-back to central midfield with maturity beyond his years. However, loan spells at RB Salzburg and Las Palmas have meant he is yet to feature under Slot. A serious hamstring injury has further stalled his progress, and his long-term role at Anfield remains unclear.

A close friend of Salah, Tsimikas joined Roma on a season-long loan during the summer. The Greek left-back had been a dependable deputy to Andy Robertson since arriving in 2021, but the signing of Milos Kerkez pushed him further down the pecking order. Despite making 18 Premier League appearances last season, he was deemed surplus to requirements, and at 29, a return to Slot’s plans appears unlikely even if Roma opt against a permanent deal.
