Premier League VAR Hub Explains Why Richarlison’s Early Goal Was Disallowed

The Premier League’s VAR hub has released an official explanation following the controversial decision to rule out Richarlison’s early goal for Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs thought they had taken the lead when Richarlison finished clinically in the opening stages of the match, sparking celebrations among the away supporters. However, the goal was quickly checked by VAR and ultimately disallowed, much to the frustration of players and fans alike.

According to the Premier League Match Centre, the decision was made due to an offside offence in the build-up to the goal. VAR officials determined that Richarlison was in an offside position at the moment the final pass was played, with a part of his body deemed ahead of the last defender. The on-field decision was therefore overturned following a semi-automated offside review.

The explanation has done little to calm the backlash, with many supporters arguing that the margins involved were extremely fine and questioning the consistency of offside calls across the league. Spurs manager and players were visibly frustrated, believing the decision denied them a crucial early advantage.
