Liverpool could receive a surprise boost in the January window after Fabrizio Romano shared a fresh update on Harvey Elliott’s potential return.

 

 

Aston Villa may be required to pay Liverpool a termination fee over Harvey Elliott’s loan, with Fabrizio Romano offering a fresh update on the situation.

Despite spending more than £400m during the summer, Liverpool sanctioned Elliott’s late loan move to Aston Villa before the transfer window closed. However, the 22-year-old has found opportunities limited under Unai Emery, featuring just five times across all competitions, only twice as a starter.

Elliott’s most recent appearance for Villa came on October 2 in the Europa League against Feyenoord, and he has since fallen out of contention as Emery’s side continue to improve. Villa are currently competing in the Premier League title race, but The Athletic reported that ending Elliott’s loan early would come at a cost.

According to the report, because Elliott has already represented two clubs this season, he cannot join another, meaning his only options are to remain at Villa or return to Liverpool. With no recall clause in the loan agreement, Liverpool cannot simply bring him back, and Villa would need to pay a fee to terminate the deal early. Emery reportedly feels other players in Elliott’s position better meet his tactical demands, which has kept the midfielder out of both the team and matchday squads.

Romano has since stated that Elliott is “not expected to stay at Aston Villa.” Speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer expert explained that the move was completed very late on deadline day, but the lack of game time has left both Liverpool and the player unhappy. Villa are now seeking a resolution, with discussions set to take place over Elliott’s return to Anfield and what comes next—either staying at Liverpool or securing another loan.

Romano added that Emery is satisfied with Elliott’s attitude in training and stressed that the situation is purely a tactical decision. Talks between Liverpool and Villa are expected soon, but the clear expectation is that Elliott’s time at Villa is coming to an end.

When previously asked about Elliott and the transfer situation, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot avoided the topic, insisting his focus was solely on upcoming matches. Addressing Elliott directly, Slot reiterated that the midfielder is currently a Villa player and was intended to spend the full season on loan.
