Former Liverpool striker poised to make a quick comeback to English football only five months after leaving Anfield.

 

 

Just five months after leaving Liverpool, a promising winger is reportedly on the verge of returning to English football.

Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez were the high-profile departures from the Reds’ attack, while academy talent Ranel Young made a surprising move to Serbian side Usce in July, despite being offered a new contract at Anfield. The 19-year-old, however, featured in only five matches for the Stepojevac-based club—and none since September—before terminating his contract, leaving him a free agent.

On Wednesday, Pete O’Rourke reported for Football Insider that Young has agreed to join Bristol City, having already taken part in training sessions with the Championship side. The transfer is expected to be finalized ahead of the January window, adding the teenager to Gerhard Struber’s squad for the second half of the season. The Robins currently sit 11th in the table, just four points off the play-off spots.

Young never made a competitive first-team appearance for Liverpool, though he was named on the bench twice last season: during the Carabao Cup win at Brighton in October 2024 and the FA Cup shock defeat to Plymouth Argyle the following February (Transfermarkt).

During his time in Liverpool’s academy, the 19-year-old impressed with his pace, dribbling, and direct attacking style, often cutting inside onto his left foot and delivering dangerous balls into the box.

While Struber has several attackers at Ashton Gate, natural wingers are in short supply, giving Young a realistic chance to earn Championship minutes in the New Year. Having lost in the play-off semi-finals last season, Bristol City are well-placed to challenge for promotion again in 2026, making this a timely opportunity for Young to join the Robins.

After his short-lived stint in Serbia, he’ll be hoping to make a meaningful impact on the banks of the Avon for the remainder of the season.
