Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United enter the chase for a 2025 Ballon d’Or nominee

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are both monitoring the situation of Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay.

The Scotland international has impressed since arriving in Italy from Manchester United, enjoying an outstanding campaign in which he scored 13 goals across all competitions and played a key role in Napoli’s title-winning season. His performances placed him among Europe’s standout midfielders, earning him a Ballon d’Or nomination. Given his quality, it is no surprise that Premier League clubs such as Tottenham and Newcastle are considering a move to bring him back to England. Arsenal and Manchester United have also been credited with interest.

Why McTominay suits Tottenham

Spurs are in need of greater energy and creativity in midfield, and McTominay could fit the bill perfectly. At 29, he has extensive Premier League experience and could make an immediate impact. A return to England may appeal to him as well, with a sense of unfinished business in the league potentially making a switch to North London attractive.

However, according to Calciomercato, while McTominay is hugely popular in Naples, the intense attention he receives has begun to feel overwhelming. This could influence his decision should an opportunity to return to England arise.

Newcastle also interested

Newcastle, meanwhile, are eager to add depth and quality in central midfield, having relied heavily on Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali. McTominay’s presence would offer balance and experience.

Napoli are unlikely to part with the midfielder cheaply. He is a key figure in their squad, and losing him would be a significant setback. Any potential exit would likely require a substantial offer.

That said, if either Tottenham or Newcastle can strike a deal, McTominay would represent a major boost for both clubs.
