Alexander Isak might be back at Liverpool sooner than expected – that’s what I’ve heard.

 

 

Hugo Ekitike and Federico Chiesa could be the biggest beneficiaries of Alexander Isak’s injury setback against Tottenham—and he may return sooner than expected.

Ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes Isak may struggle to make an impact in his first season at Liverpool. The striker suffered a broken leg at Spurs shortly after scoring only his second Premier League goal for the club, potentially sidelining him for months.

Ekitike and Chiesa both featured in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Wolves, with Mohamed Salah absent due to the African Cup of Nations. Wyness, who was Everton’s CEO from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a consultancy advising top clubs, believes manager Arne Slot has sufficient squad depth to manage without Isak.

On the latest Inside Track podcast, Wyness revealed that Isak could return in just four weeks. He said:

“That’s football—sometimes one tackle can take out your top players, and insurance rarely covers it. Liverpool will have to find a way to compensate, but they have squad depth. They could sell if they wanted, and I’m surprised Chiesa hasn’t had more chances. Both he and Ekitike are fan favourites. There are other combinations they can try to get things moving again. For Isak, I heard four to six weeks, which seems short for a broken leg, but he’s still lacking game time this season, so making an impact will be difficult.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool are reportedly considering Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni as a potential January signing. The 26-year-old could cost up to £80 million. Ibrahima Konate’s future remains uncertain, with his contract expiring at the end of the season, meaning Slot may need to reinforce his centre-back options if Konate leaves.
