Report: Two Liverpool players may be allowed to exit in January despite squad injury woes

 

 

Despite Arne Slot’s squad currently being stretched thin, Liverpool could still approve the departures of certain players during the January transfer window. According to Premier Injuries, the Reds could be missing up to six players for their upcoming match against Wolves on Saturday, not including Mo Salah (Africa Cup of Nations) and Dominik Szoboszlai (suspended).

Long-term injuries to Giovanni Leoni and Alexander Isak have further reduced depth in both defence and attack. However, a reliable source suggests that Liverpool may allow some players in these areas to leave next month.

The latest Transfer DealSheet from The Athletic, released on Boxing Day, highlights two young Liverpool talents as potential exits in January. Trent Kone-Doherty is viewed as an ideal candidate for a loan move, with clubs continuing to monitor the 19-year-old winger’s development.

Similarly, Rhys Williams is expected to attract renewed interest after failing to secure a temporary move last summer. Even with a depleted first-team squad during the festive period, it remains plausible that both players could be allowed to leave.

While Kone-Doherty could offer attacking depth off the bench, Liverpool may still approve a loan for a player who has made only two substitute appearances in domestic cup competitions. A stint at an EFL club could provide the teenager with valuable senior experience, provided he receives regular game time rather than just sitting on the bench.

As for Williams, the shortage of centre-backs following Leoni’s ACL injury has not led to opportunities under Slot. The 24-year-old hasn’t been included in a matchday squad since being an unused substitute in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton in September.

Williams played a key role alongside Nat Williams in the 2020/21 season, helping Liverpool secure a miraculous Champions League spot. However, it’s clear he is not part of Slot’s current plans. A half-season loan to an EFL club could give him first-team exposure, and a strong performance might lead to a permanent move once his Anfield contract expires next summer.

With limited chances at Liverpool in the second half of the season, both Kone-Doherty and Williams could realistically be loaned out in January to gain valuable minutes on the pitch in early 2026.
