Three Free-Transfer Targets Tottenham Could Pursue in January

Tottenham are expected to be active during the January transfer window, something Thomas Frank has openly acknowledged.

Speaking earlier this month, the Danish coach said: “We will definitely be looking to strengthen, that’s certain. Like everyone else, we’d like to get deals done as early as possible, ideally before January 31.” However, January is not only about immediate reinforcements. Premier League clubs are also allowed to negotiate with players based abroad whose contracts expire in the summer, enabling them to agree pre-contract deals for free transfers. Spurs could benefit from this rule, as several high-profile players may be available at no cost ahead of next season.

Here are three players Tottenham might consider approaching in January:

Ruben Neves
Neves joined Al Hilal from Wolves in 2023, but his contract with the Saudi club runs out next summer. The 28-year-old was a key figure at Wolves, captaining them to Premier League promotion in 2018 and making over 250 appearances during his six-year spell. Al Hilal reportedly paid £47 million for him, so securing his services for free would be a major boost for Spurs. That said, he is likely to attract interest from several clubs, and Tottenham could even look to sign him in January for a reduced fee.

Dusan Vlahovic
Vlahovic could be an unexpected option. The Juventus striker is reportedly unwilling to extend his contract, which would see him leave the Italian club next summer. The 25-year-old has previously been linked with a Premier League move, notably to Arsenal in 2021, and would provide additional depth alongside Dominic Solanke and Richarlison. He has scored six goals in 17 matches this season, and with Fabio Paratici’s connections, a potential deal cannot be ruled out.

Leon Goretzka
Signing Goretzka would send a strong message. The German international has recently been linked with a move to Tottenham, with indications that he may be prepared to leave Bayern Munich. Now 30 and with close to 300 appearances for the Bundesliga champions, Goretzka would bring experience, quality, and a winning mentality to the Spurs midfield.
