“Liverpool eye striker admired by Virgil van Dijk as Semenyo opts for Manchester City”

 

 

Liverpool are exploring alternative targets in case their pursuit of Antoine Semenyo falls through during the January transfer window.

According to a transfer insider closely following the Semenyo saga, the Reds have identified former Manchester United striker Memphis Depay as a potential short-term option. Currently at Brazilian club Corinthians, Depay could be tempted to return to Europe, especially given his close friendships with several Liverpool players.

Another candidate on Liverpool’s radar is Atletico Madrid forward Alexander Sorloth. The Norwegian enjoyed a standout season with the Spanish club last year, netting 20 league goals, and has added six goals in all competitions so far this season.

Liverpool had been considered frontrunners for Semenyo until recently, but competition from other top English clubs—including Manchester United, Tottenham, and Manchester City—has intensified, with City now leading the race. Chelsea also made initial inquiries earlier this week but have since withdrawn. Latest reports indicate Semenyo has chosen to join Manchester City in January.

A move for Depay would see him reunite with familiar faces at Anfield, strengthening the club’s “Dutch connection.” Captain Virgil van Dijk has long admired the former United forward and recently praised him after Depay became the Netherlands’ all-time top scorer during the September international break, surpassing Robin van Persie.

With 55 goals in 108 international appearances as of December 2025, Depay’s experience, leadership, and proven quality make him an appealing, low-risk option for manager Arne Slot.
