Arne Slot remains tight-lipped over ‘world-class’ midfielder linked with Anfield return

 

 

Harvey Elliott’s loan spell at Aston Villa appears set to end earlier than planned, with the midfielder expected to return to Liverpool when the January transfer window opens.

The 22-year-old has endured a difficult four-month stint at Villa Park, and it has now been confirmed that the Midlands club will not pursue a permanent deal. Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery has effectively ruled out activating the obligation-to-buy clause included in the original agreement.

That clause, believed to be worth around £35 million, would have been triggered automatically once Elliott reached 10 appearances. However, with the midfielder struggling to fit into Emery’s tactical system, Villa have chosen to limit his involvement to avoid the financial commitment, making a mid-season return to Anfield the most realistic outcome.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming clash with Wolves, head coach Arne Slot was questioned about the possibility of reintegrating the highly rated midfielder, especially with the squad weakened by Alexander Isak’s serious injury. Slot declined to comment in detail, insisting Elliott remains an Aston Villa player and stressing that his full focus is on Liverpool’s immediate fixtures against Wolves and Leeds.

Despite Slot’s public stance, Liverpool’s growing injury concerns — including Isak’s broken leg and Mohamed Salah’s absence due to AFCON — could push the Dutch coach to consider Elliott once the transfer window officially opens.

However, Elliott’s return is not without complications. Although supporters may hope he is either reintegrated or loaned out again, FIFA regulations restrict his options. Having already made an appearance for Liverpool earlier in the season before joining Villa, Elliott has represented two clubs this campaign.

As a result, he is ineligible to play for a third team, meaning a new loan move in January is not possible. Elliott must either remain at Liverpool as a squad option or continue his spell at Villa without featuring.

Given Emery’s position, a return to Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre now appears the most likely resolution for all parties.
