Liverpool target 55-goal forward admired by Virgil van Dijk as Semenyo opts for Manchester City

Liverpool are exploring alternative targets in case a move for Antoine Semenyo falls through during the January transfer window.

According to a well-informed transfer source who has closely followed the Semenyo situation, the Reds have identified former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay as a potential short-term solution.

Depay is currently with Brazilian side Corinthians, but a switch to Anfield could appeal to him, especially given his close relationships with several Liverpool players.

Another name on Liverpool’s shortlist is Atlético Madrid striker Alexander Sørloth. The Norwegian has impressed in Spain, netting 20 league goals last season. So far this campaign, he has scored six times in all competitions.

Liverpool no longer leading the race for Semenyo

Liverpool were viewed as the favourites to sign Semenyo just a few months ago, but competition has since intensified. Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have all entered the race, with City now reportedly in pole position.

Chelsea also made an initial enquiry earlier this week but are believed to have withdrawn their interest. Current reports suggest Semenyo has decided to join Manchester City in January.

Depay’s Liverpool connections

A move for Memphis Depay would see the Dutch forward link up with familiar faces at Anfield. Liverpool’s strong Dutch contingent includes captain Virgil van Dijk, who has publicly expressed his admiration for Depay.

Van Dijk recently praised him after Depay achieved a historic milestone during the September international break, becoming the Netherlands’ all-time top scorer by surpassing Robin van Persie.

As of December 2025, Depay has scored 55 goals in 108 international appearances, underlining his legendary status for the Oranje. His experience, leadership and track record at the top level make him a compelling and relatively low-risk option for Arne Slot.
