Antoine Semenyo Hints at Preferred Transfer After Respectfully Turning Down Move
Antoine Semenyo has already offered a subtle clue about his preferred future amid claims he has respectfully declined an approach from one club.
The Bournemouth forward has established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season, scoring eight goals and providing three assists in just 16 appearances. Only Erling Haaland and Igor Thiago have found the net more often in the league, underlining Semenyo’s rapid rise and the growing attention he is attracting from top sides.
His future is expected to be a major talking point during the January transfer window, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein describing the situation as one of the window’s biggest developing stories. Speaking on NBC Sports, Ornstein suggested a resolution could come sooner rather than later.
One destination, however, is already off the table. Tottenham Hotspur are believed to have made a strong push and were willing to offer a substantial salary, but Semenyo is said to be prioritising other options — with Manchester City and Manchester United emerging as his preferred choices. Ornstein explained that the player is carefully weighing those possibilities before making a final decision.
Liverpool have also been linked with the Ghana international, having made an enquiry in November after witnessing his quality first-hand when he scored twice at Anfield on the opening day of the season. The situation could evolve further following a serious injury setback to their £125 million striker Alexander Isak, which may prompt renewed interest. Ornstein noted that Liverpool hold Semenyo in high regard, although no decisive move has been made so far.
Semenyo, who is capable of playing through the middle or on either wing, is reported to have a £65 million release clause in his contract.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have now entered the conversation. Sky Sports reported that the Blues have made an enquiry for the 25-year-old, marking a change in stance after previously downplaying their interest. The move appears to align with Semenyo’s personal admiration for the club. During a recent visit to Classic Football Shirts, he was seen wearing and later purchasing a Chelsea shirt bearing Didier Drogba’s name, while also referring to the club’s famous 2012 Champions League triumph as “we”.
Journalist Ben Jacobs confirmed that Chelsea have performed a U-turn and initiated contact with Semenyo’s representatives, a view echoed by Ornstein, who suggested the club is now considering accelerating a January move rather than waiting until the summer.
Despite Chelsea’s renewed involvement, Manchester City and Manchester United are currently believed to be leading the race for Semenyo’s signature.
