Whenever Richarlison faces Liverpool, it’s almost guaranteed that he’ll find a way to make himself central to the drama.

The Tottenham forward memorably unveiled his pigeon celebration after a stoppage-time equaliser at Anfield in April 2023, only for Diogo Jota to score a last-gasp winner moments later, prompting a sly social media jab from Jamie Carragher. On this occasion, the former Everton striker was introduced off the bench with Spurs 2–0 down to Arne Slot’s team and just 10 minutes left, and once again, his impact was immediate.

Just three minutes after coming on, Richarlison capitalised on a loose ball in the Liverpool box after the Reds failed to clear a corner, scoring a goal that set up a tense finale in north London.

Richarlison’s behaviour leads to Szoboszlai ban

During his celebration, the 28-year-old shoved Hugo Ekitike on the back of the neck while the Frenchman was face-down on the turf, before running over to Dominik Szoboszlai and yelling in his face.

Amazingly, it was Szoboszlai who was shown a yellow card by referee John Brooks — his fifth of the Premier League season — meaning he will now miss next Saturday’s match against Wolves. This is especially frustrating given Liverpool’s already lengthy injury and absence list.

Mohamed Salah is away at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Cody Gakpo, Wataru Endo and Joe Gomez were already injured. Conor Bradley seemed to pick up a knock before half-time, and Alexander Isak was forced off after being fouled by Micky van de Ven as he scored Liverpool’s opener.

Completely unnecessary from Richarlison

Richarlison’s history with Liverpool is well known, from his strange remarks about Virgil van Dijk to his immature social media posts following the 2022 Champions League final defeat.

Even so, his conduct after scoring was disgraceful. There was no need to provoke Ekitike and Szoboszlai when he could have simply returned to the centre circle and restarted play, especially at a moment when Liverpool were clearly shaken.

The Brazilian was later booked for arguing with Brooks at full time — unsurprisingly — but his actions after the goal played a role in Szoboszlai’s suspension for an incident that never warranted punishment.

In the end, Liverpool had the final say, leaving Richarlison on the losing side of a 2–1 victory that lifted the Reds into the Premier League’s top five, at least temporarily.
