Steven Gerrard Signals Willingness to Return to Liverpool With ‘Brutally Honest’ Admission

Arne Slot’s Liverpool edged Tottenham Hotspur 2–1 in the Premier League over the weekend, but it would be fair to say their title defence has got off to a shaky start. Despite that win, club legend Steven Gerrard has publicly backed the Dutchman, delivering what has been described as a “brutally honest” verdict on the team’s struggles.

Slot became only the fifth manager to win the Premier League in his debut season, clinching the title with four games to spare. However, this campaign has been a stark contrast, even after Liverpool invested more than £400 million in new signings during the summer. Big-name arrivals Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz were expected to make an immediate impact, but neither has truly found form yet. As things stand, Liverpool are fifth in the table, prompting Gerrard to weigh in on Slot’s future.

Reports suggest Liverpool considered 12 candidates to replace Jurgen Klopp, including Xabi Alonso, Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi, before eventually appointing Slot from Feyenoord in the summer of 2024. Gerrard, who made 710 appearances for the club between 1997 and 2015, was never part of that shortlist. Still, he was recently asked whether he would consider returning to Anfield in any role.

Concerns have grown over Slot’s handling of a squad packed with star players following such heavy spending. Speaking to Ally McCoist on TNT Sports’ Ally’s Social Club, Gerrard discussed Liverpool’s difficult start to the 2025/26 season.
“I don’t want Arne Slot to lose his job,” Gerrard said. “I want him to sort this out and make Liverpool great again. Just four or five months ago I was celebrating all over the city when we won the league.”
While expressing confidence that Slot can turn things around, Gerrard made it clear he would be willing to help the club if asked.

“I’m a Liverpool fan and I want what’s best for the club. If Liverpool ever need me in any role, I’ll be there.”
He added: “I’ll be brutally honest — I’d help Liverpool in any department, at any time. I’d give them everything I could.”
Fans were divided in response. One supporter said the club’s hierarchy would never consider Gerrard for a first-team role, while another felt he could add value as an assistant coach, particularly in man-management. Others dismissed the idea of Gerrard replacing Slot, even temporarily, as unrealistic.

The win over Tottenham was Liverpool’s third in five matches and moved them up to fifth place, ahead of rivals Manchester United and surprise package Sunderland. Their next fixture sees Slot’s side face Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 27.
Gerrard’s willingness to help is unsurprising given his history with the club. His managerial career began in Liverpool’s youth system before he took charge of Rangers in 2018, where he spent over three years. He later managed Aston Villa from November 2021, followed by an 18-month spell with Saudi side Al-Ettifaq, which ended in January 2025.

Now working regularly as a pundit and still without a managerial post, Gerrard has been linked with a return to Rangers. Whether Slot ever calls on his experience remains to be seen, but Gerrard’s loyalty to Liverpool is as strong as ever.
